my week in review.
Do you ever feel like the day disappears and your to do list didn't shrink much? With a baby, my life is on repeat. Everyday. I am going going going from sun up until way past sun down and still have more that needs to get down. This balance thing is tricky people. Nonetheless, my week was not exciting but sometimes boring is good. Our excitement usually involves the ER and that I can do with out.
Our pool opened on Saturday.
So the boys swam on Saturday, Monday and today. I am hoping all this sun and water will make them nice and tired by nightfall.
My oldest "graduated" from preschool today.
Both boys will start swim lessons tonight.
Nicholas is still the best baby ever. But very lazy, which translates to a very mellow, easy-going babe. Bless him. He knows just what mama needs.
So tell me, how was your holiday weekend?
q.a. design.
My lovely designer, Jenna of q.a. design is now taking on a limited number of clients for the month of July. If you are in need of some graphic design expertise, Jenna is your gal. She is a gem to work with and she's got mad skills I tell you. Snatch her up before she gets booked!
Here is a little peek at one of her latest creations. Jenna is awesome. I promise.

q&a with Michelle Armas + friday favorites.
I have a colossal crush on Michelle Armas. Her art is ah-maz-ing. Seriously people. I am going to save my pretty pennies and commission her one day. I will, I will. I had the opportunity to exchange emails with Michelle. She is nice, witty and extremely talented. She so graciously participated in a little q&a. Here is what she had to say...
What are some of your earliest memories of art?
Sitting at the "kids table" at family dinners drawing or coloring in my books with colored pencils my dad got me.
When did you know that you would follow your passion and paint?
Not too long ago...I stumbled a lot before I figured out how to stand up straight.
How would you classify your style?
Abstract, colorful, full of movement.
Do you tend to use certain colors when you are in a particular mood?
I totally think so! Right now I am sort of tired and in need of refreshing, so I want dark blues and greens that feel soothing to me.
Do you have any favorite artists that inspire you?
Klimt, totally transcendent. But there are so many others! I love anything from the Vienna Secession: lots of expression of ideas that are not literal, layering, just stunning thinkers and makers.
Do you like to listen to music while you work?
Sure, I have a play list I call Jujumagumbo, and it is full of sweet, fun music. I realized recently that I like woman singers. Also books, love listening to a book while I work.
What does your workspace look like?
Sooo great, I have three desks all together and then a painting bench with a stainless cart full of paints next to it. I have an area for stretching, for sitting and for computer stuff. Two nice windows that face south so I never get direct sun in them, but they are bright. ahhhh, so nice. A doggy bed for my ladies who studio assist by barking and nudging, and a whole wall with shelves for paintings and boxes.
And since this is a blog all about favorites, tell me your top ten favorite things!
1. Girlfriends! I used to not have a lot of girlfriends, and in the last few years I have made a real effort to reach out to cool, inspiring, or just plain sweet ladies. I am so happy I did, and keep doing so.
2. FAUX/real jewelery. WWWWowzas.
3. Fringed tulips.
4. Hamburger at the Mercer Kitchen in Soho. Dude, totally changed my life.
5. Totokaelo: best place to buy stuff online. The girls who run it are so great at helping you figure out what size to buy, such great editing and really great presentation too. GREAT jewelery section as well.
6. Lavender, mine is blooming and I love it!
7. Home made margaritas, yum.
8. Mexican black pottery, so pretty and simple with major sexyness
9. Les Indiennes pillow shams, so soft and pretty
10. Vintage Lucite lighting: always searching ebay for it.
A million thank you's Michelle!
Be sure to read this completely awesome post - detailing out from start to finish how Michelle works a commission piece.

my wish list. clarisonic. jcrew. emersonmade.
Ladies I am enlisting your help. My wish list is ever growing but right now I have a little moo-lah to spend and I can not decide what I want. There are three top contenders, all different from one another but equally fantastic. Tell me, which would you choose if you could only pick one...

My skin could use the Clarisonic Mia Sonic Care Cleansing System
. What I want to know is it really worth the money? Would I notice an improvement?
(the new travel version of the original Clarisonic)

This particular style of denim (EM LowRiders - Sunwashed Denim) is currently sold out. I would also most likely need to get them taken up in length a bit.

The purchase of the jcrew jericho tote is contingent upon my sister buying one of my handbags. This would essentially replace my old one.
Help me decide!! Sometimes I am completely horrible at coming to a decision. Just horrible.

When I was first pregnant with Nicholas, Tyler asked how babies were born. I told him an informative, yet simplistic answer, which satisfied his curiosity. We have yet had the big question that I know is looming in the near future... How are babies made? I feel ill prepared.
Do you have older kids? Have you had "THE" talk? What age? Did you use a book? Do share!

motherhood | silly things and such.

My oldest is just about to turn six and one of my favorite things to do with him right now is to have a little one on one time after his two younger brothers are fast asleep. Tyler is a miniature version of my husband and I am always quite amused at the words that flow from his mouth. He is observant and extremely charming, or so I think.
A little peek into a few of our conversations, if you will...
T : brushing teeth
M : looking in the mirror - turn to look at my gluteus maximus
T : "mom, why do girls look at their bums?"
M : "girls like pretty bums. who else looks at their bum?"
T : "the mom on Mr. Incredible"
M : "will you still give me hugs and kisses when you are a teenager?"
T : "no, when I am married."
M : "who are you going to marry?"
T : "ashley" (a little girl in his preschool class)
M : "does ashley want to marry you?"
T : grins "I don't know."
So tell me, what are some of the funny things your children say?
Every Wednesday I will share my thoughts on motherhood. The good. The bad. And the ugly. Do you have anything specific you would like to discuss? Email me at info(at)afewofmyfavorites.com with the subject motherhood.

Say hello to prettymod! Prettymod is a new to me etsy shop and a brand new sponsor on My Favorite Things.
I stumbled upon Kari's darling print shop when I was searching for a particular print design I wanted for a gallery wall in my home. I began my search and was coming up empty until prettymod appeared on my google search list. I clicked over and immediately knew I found what I needed. I wasted no time in contacting Kari. I told her exactly what I was looking for and just like that I received my stag silhouette print in grey. Might I add that the print turned out fantastic!
Kari's shop, prettymod, is home to vibrant graphic prints, adding a dollop of color to your walls. I adore the simple, modern design and the bold color combinations.
welcome prettymod.

my week in review.
Last week was fairly normal.
Husband is almost finished installing laminate wood flooring in our living room. Now I am on the hunt for a fabulous rug. Any suggestions?
We made a trip to the bookstore. My older boys have a love for books, just like their mama. I could live at the bookstore friends. Seriously.
We dabbled in a little bit of art, registered for Kinder this fall and ended up with fifths disease by the end of the week.
Naked booties galore over here. My middle guy had to go potty. In the middle of traffic. On a country(ish) rode. I pulled over. He dropped his pants and then realized he was standing in a field of ants. The pants were sacrificed, left behind. Always exciting over here.

wolfum.
It only took one glance to realize that Wolfum would quickly become a favorite. Annabel creates some of the prettiest textiles out there. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and pattern designs. I had a chance to converse with Annabel (via email) and I enjoyed reading about her love of fabric and design and what drew her in.
"my inspiration came from several sources. my italian grandfather was a textile importer and fostered in us a love of contemporary italian household linens. my mother has a collection of vintage fabrics dating back to the mid 19th century and her grandmothers girlhood in missouri. i have a very visual memory and can recall my wallpaper from when i was 3, my favorite floral party dress from age 5 and several other items along the way."
I was lucky enough to receive one of her lovely throw pillows (stitched). The pictures on the site do not do them justice. The prints have a timeless quality, which I love. Trends come and go, but Annabel knew she wanted to create something that could stay in your home for many, many years. Her soft goods are made from a recycled organic cotton poly twill. They are durable (yay, because I have three boys) and the fabric is almost wrinkle-free. Another definite plus - you can machine wash. Not that I am letting my boys rough house with it. They know my throw pillows are off limits. You also have the choice of goose down inserts or poly fill inserts. I prefer the goose down.
A full service store is in the works, but in the mean time you can visit Wolfum and contact Annabel via email.
Go, browse, shop. I promise you'll fall in love too.
I was given a Wolfum throw pillow to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I only post what I love! If you are a company interested in having your product reviewed and think you would be a good fit, please email me at info(at)afewofmyfavorites.com for more information.

motherhood | 1+2+3.
image credit | auburn soul | my benny fall of 2009
When my oldest was just 10 months old I found out I was pregnant with baby Elmer #2. I was naive and extremely excited to have two boys, close in age. I visualized them being the best of friends. I not once worried about the change in dynamics it would cause or the way a new babe can totally rock your world. So far I had the fortune of having blissfully easy pregnancies. I was beyond exhausted as my body grew this miraculous human being, but I wasn't nervous.
Perhaps it was because I was still in the physically hard stage with Tyler. He was still a babe. Still required all of me, from sun up until sun down. He was just 19 months old when Benjamin joined us.
When I became pregnant with Nicholas, my boys were older. Tyler was four and a half and Benjamin was three. Both were potty trained. Going out for errands was becoming easier, almost enjoyable at times. We could carry on mini conversations. My boys were little humans and I was loving the stage they were at. My pregnancy this time was hard. It stretched me both physically and mentally. Tyler would start preschool that fall (2010), a few months before Nicholas' birth. I had a short window of time to create special moments with just Benjamin, hopefully to help ease the transition to no longer being the baby.
The months kept ticking by, quickly I might add and I was feeling a bit nervous for the transition to three. I was never concerned that I would not have enough love. I've learned that my heart expands, grows, transforms, with each new child. But this time around, my boys were somewhat independent. I had entered a new stage of freedom and I was a little anxious to return to the land of baby. I was unsure how my older boys would fully grasp the change that was about to take place, the way a new baby would use up so much of mom's time and energy. I was nervous to start all over.
Some of my concerns unfolded and took shape but what I didn't expect was how perfectly Nicholas fit into our family. It was as though he was the last missing puzzle piece. That's not to say it did not take my older boys time to adjust, to discover their new place in our little family of five. Three is tiring. Three is loud. At the end of the day, I gaze around and feel as though there was not one thing I accomplished, besides the necessities. But I love my boys something fierce.
Did you have concerns with each new baby you brought home?
Do you have children yet or currently pregnant with #1?

Oh my it is warming up down here in Texas. I regret to say that I am already not looking forward to the scorching temperatures. I fantasize about planning an escape each summer. Unfortunately it is just a fantasy.
With the rising temperatures and the sun shining down - I am quick to grab the sunscreen. My dad has had a run of bad luck with skin cancer as of late and I don't care to follow in his footsteps (love you dad). I burn easily, never tan and freckle like nobody's business. Sunscreen and me, we are besties.
I almost always (hey - i sometimes forget) apply a facial sunscreen lotion before my moisturizer. I've tried a handful of different brands (drugstore, department store & from the dermatologist). Most of the time they feel too thick. I don't want to actually feel like I have sunscreen on - or smell like I do either, unless I am poolside.
My favorite choice right now is Super Fluid UV Defense by Kiehls. Lighweight. Goes on smooth. No strong scent. I love it and actually don't mind using it. Every. Single. Day. I also like Kiehls Creme de Corps Light-Weight body lotion SPF 30. I will slather that on my neck and arms if I know we will be playing at the park that day. It smells like summer!
I also like to carry the sunscreen stick by California Baby
. I can grab it out of my bag easily and apply it to my boys' faces. Most definitely need to protect their precious skin too.
Do you have a favorite brand of sun protection? Do share!

I also like to carry the sunscreen stick by California Baby

generations.
Over the weekend I tried to spend a bit of time uploading photos to my external hard drive and to an online site. I still have a long way to go but I am determined to play catch up. You could say I am a teensy bit paranoid of losing my pictures. They are priceless. And it has happened before. Lesson learned the hard way.
I could not help but browse through the older moments. Photographs otherwise forgotten. I came across two pictures in particular that reminded me of the importance of family. The bonds that are created are beautiful. I love that my boys have family close by and that I get to take part in new memories made.
It was just an ordinary day at the in laws. Both Tyler and Benny were learning the fine art of how to make cinnamon rolls. Great Grammy was their teacher. She is an amazing person. I love to listen to her stories. Stories about life, motherhood and raising boys.
Oh and her cinnamon rolls are divine!
friedasophie jewelry design giveaway!
Friends, I've been in a bit of a funk lately and I need to snap out of it. Big time. So it is time to stop focusing on me and turn the attention on you - my readers. We are long over due for a giveaway, no?
Even though I am a stay at home mom and don't necessarily "go places" most days, I still like to get ready. Hair + make-up + clothes + jewelry. Topping off my outfit with my favorite watch and a simple necklace really improves my mood. When I look good, I tend to feel good. Please tell me I'm not the only gal out there that feels this way. I have a handful of favorite necklaces and among them is one from friedasophie jewelry design.
Sandra puts lots of love behind her jewelry design. The gemstones she chooses to incorporate in her design are gorgeous. Lovely colors. And I have a soft spot for gold, which is used in quite a bit of her jewelry.
Ladies, today you have a chance to win a stunning Darling Green Emerald Rondelle 14K Gold Necklace. The green is gorgeous. The necklace is simple and sweet. Pair with jeans + a tee or throw on your favorite spring dress.
Leave me a comment (with email - if you want me to contact you) telling me what you would wear the necklace with. The giveaway will run through Friday (midnight CST) and I will announce the winner over the weekend. Open to both US and international readers.
Good luck!
P.S. Don't forget to LIKE friedasophie on facebook and follow on twitter!

I want to thank each dear friend who participated this week in the motherhood series. I loved reading the words of five completely different women who share a common thread, motherhood.
I plan to continue posting about motherhood each wednesday. If you would like a topic discussed or have a special motherhood moment you would like to contribute, please email me at info(at)afewofmyfavorites.com with "motherhood" in the subject.
