are you a lefty or a righty in the bedroom?

As I slipped into bed last night a thought occurred to me --- I wonder what side of the bed the female population typically sleeps on?  Completely random and obtuse but that is how my particularly tired brain was thinking at the moment.

Way back when, I use to be a lefty.  There was no compromise.  I needed to sleep on the left side of the bed. You know, when you stand at the foot of the bed and look at it.  I needed that left side.  But somewhere along our (almost) ten years of marriage I switched.  Well fancy that!

After our hotel living days, (we traveled for the mister's job and lived in hotels --- sounds much more glamorous than it actually was), after our apartment living days and sometime in our first home, I kicked the mister off the right side and claimed it as my own.  I believe it happened sometime after the birth of our second.  I realized the right side of the bed had more floor space for all the baby paraphernalia and decided, huh, I should move on over.

And ever since then I've taken up residence on the right side.  I've been known to flip flop back, say, if we are staying away on holiday and the bed has a side table on the left and not the right.  I'll claim the left with said side table because I am greedy like that.

So tell me, do you sleep on the left or right?  Does it matter to you?  Have you always slept on that particular side?

  4. I read somewhere once that women sleep on the side closest to the door so they can get to their kids quickly and men do the opposite for the opposite reason. I know it's sounds kind of sexist, but when I ask married couples with kids I've found it's pretty accurate.

  5. I always sleep furthest from the door. That way if someone breaks into the house during the night to kill us, hubby will get it first, and I might get skipped over. Strange? Yes, but I've never claimed to be normal.

  6. The first five years of marriage i slept on the left, except for a few months when I was massively pregnant. After we moved across the country I was still left, for a few weeks, then i realized the right side was closer to the bathroom, so we switched and I've been on the right ever since.

  7. I sleep on the right when facing the bed but if we stay somewhere else I tend to want to be closest to the door which is what my side is now

  8. Currently I am sleeping on the right. But it mostly has to do with the door. I like to be furthest away from the door.

  9. You are so cute Molly :) I like to switch it up, ya know, keep it fresh. Left, Right, Middle. Each side has it's benefits but I think I fancy middle best, snuggled between husband and son.

  11. I've thought about this so much too, how funny! I'm a righty as well. Which is weird because now I am farther from the door, but my baby doesn't wake up much during the night, so it works! I've always been curious as to what side most women sleep on.

  12. I sleep closest to the door. I've always slept closest to the door, even before we had kids, it just happened naturally that way. We've lived in 5 places since we've been married & every time it's close to the door, whether it's left or right.

  13. I've switched back and forth throughout our marriage. I was a righty when I worked night shifts in L&D but now that we've been in our house I'm on the left. Interesting question!

  14. I completely agree with Kateryn! I always sleep on the side that's furthest away from the door. That way I feel safer!!!

  16. If you're facing the bed I sleep on the right. ALWAYS. I posted about this way back in 2008 and most of my friends sleep on the left, interestingly. ( http://emilyssomething.blogspot.com/2008/11/question-of-week.html )
Whenever we move I position the bed so that it's closest to the door and has the most space because I get up the most at nighttime.

  17. Started out on the left when we first married, but switched to the left after about five years. In a hotel, I get the side closer to the bathroom.

  18. The right! (Unless, yes, we're staying somewhere else and the good table and reading lamp is on the left.) ;)

  19. Funny, i'm a flopper - and sleep on the side farthest from the door. In our current home that means I'm on the left side. When we travel I sleep on whatever side is farthest from the door. We've lived in 3 homes in the 13.5 years we've been together and I've been on the right side in one home, and the left in two homes.

  20. I'm side impartial as long as I'm against the wall. I never like my bed to float in the middle of the room - always has to be against a wall, and the wall is MINE! If we're not sleeping at home - I get the side furthest from the door.

  21. I sleep on the right...not sure why it does happen to be closest to the door... It is said in a book about emotions by Louise Hays that right is associated with feminine things and left masculine... Just a thought.
