Birth order --- does it play a part in our personality?
Now that I am a mother to three, yes count them... One. Two. Three. boys, I have had the opportunity to watch birth order in action. I think we take on certain personality traits and attributes according to the order we were born and then blossom into our own.
Tyler, our oldest. He leans towards being bossy. He is a take charge, go get 'em type of kid. I see it every day in the way he interacts with his brothers and peers. He is a leader. He is driven and hardly every gives up.
Benjamin, our second born. The middle man. He does not like confrontation. I have watched him give a toy to Tyler or let him go first in a game. He does not like to see his brothers become upset and likes to please them, well, most of the time.
Nicholas, our youngest. The baby. Although he is still a little he is such a delight. Happy go lucky my little nic nac is. And I am sure the older two will accuse me one day of spoiling him. Isn't that the way it goes? The youngest is far more spoiled than the rest?
What number are you in the line up?
Do you notice certain birth order traits in your own children?

wow I am the oldest of 3 sisters and I would say that all 3 of us perfectly match your boys attributes... and yes the youngest sister is accused of being spoiled! Isn't it crazy how it all works out like that?
ReplyDeleteI am glad I stumbled upon your blog. It is a bright and cheerful place to be!
ReplyDeleteAs for birth order, I have two and am the baby of three. I would say that birth order certainly plays a role, but gender and birth placement might too. I was a tad spoiled; we always looked to my brother, the oldest, as knowing more; and my sister, the middle child, is a fantastic fixer and peace keeper. My husband is the middle child, but the only boy so I think that left him with a different role.
My son, the oldest, needs more attention, loves giving directions and is use to people doing what he asks. My daughter, is my baby and able to keep herself busy for hours. I attribute that to being second because she had to figure out some things, whereas I was completely attentive to my son.
It is a great topic and have three boys you are certainly going to see some trends I think :)
I agree... gender and birth placement too :)
DeleteI'm the youngest of six. I would say that I got spoiled but not in the normal way--I think my parents were just tired of parenting by the time they got to me. I never had a curfew or any rules, really. But I was also really trustworthy, so they didn't have much to worry about. I got to go on trips my siblings didn't because I was still home when my parents were older and had more money. That kind of thing.
ReplyDeleteI see birth order in my 3 kids but it's a little different from yours. My oldest is super kind, like your second. He's not so much driven or bossy as he is always aiming to please. My next two are just trouble. Plain and simple.
That sounds exactly right to me! I'm the oldest of four and I'm the bossy/take-charge one, my middle sibs are funny and non-confrontational "pleasers", and the youngest is the star of the show. I don't think it's any coincidence that I married a middle child - he is so easygoing and that has helped me settle down a little bit :) I love birth order stuff too!
ReplyDeleteBeing the 10th of 11 makes things a little more complicated when referring to birth order & attributes. :) That being said, I was told growing up that I got away with much more than my older siblings. However, I was a very responsible child/teen. I had many to learn from. ;)
