a homeschooling update. it's official.

Step 1 : read the unschooling handbook
Step 2 : casually bring up the subject with the mister
Step 3 : encourage the mister to read the unschooling handbook
Step 4 : decide (together) that you want to give this homeschooling thing a go
Step 5 : decide you're probably crazy
Step 6 : accept the said craziness
Step 7 : start planning the "school room"
Step 8 : decide on curriculum
Step 9 : officially pull the boys out of public school
Step 10 : inform the mister that we probably need to order the curriculum
Step 11 : start getting excited and nervous

I preregistered my boys in the spring for the 2012-2013 school year before we committed 100% to the idea of homeschooling.  I suppose I wanted a fall back option in case, well, who knows why, it just felt safer.  And so, I went up to the boys' school yesterday to withdrawal them.  Lo and behold, I didn't even need to do a thing!  They were not completely registered and so, once the first school bell rings on August 27th, Tyler and Benny will just fall out of their system, like they never existed.

I have decided that we will begin school on September 4, promptly at who knows what time, most likely still wearing our pajamas.  Friends, I am going into this thing with looooow expectations, so I don't get my dreams dashed to smithereens.  I am shooting for 2 hours of school a day, four days a week.  We will work in more time as we accommodate to this new lifestyle.  I am all sorts of excited with a bit of nervous mixed in.  The boys seem to be completely at ease with the idea of their mom as their teacher.  We even joked around what they would call me.  We settled on mom.

I have a feeling that Benny will be my challenge.  He is passionate and tender and hates to sit still.  That just might be a lethal combo.  I'm really not sure how everything will go.  I still need to finish up the school room, order the curriculum and buy school supplies (my favorite part).  Oh I can already smell the fresh box of waxy crayons.  Who else gets over the moon excited about school supplies?  I knew you did too.

  1. Can I just say, I hear you?!

I actually was homeschooled as a child, but still, STILL, I'm terrified to homeschool my son this year. I keep making lists and looking for more books and ideas to ward off something. Maybe failure?

Anyway, all that to say I understand.

    Good luck.

  3. That is the blessing of homeschool is you can cater to Benny's needs and do more active hands on schooling to get him more excited about learning. Better than sitting at school in a desk all day.

  4. And the great thing is in the days of Pinterest you can totally get tons of ideas to help you navigate through this and be a total success. Maybe then they will turn into the student you were that did projects the day they were assigned not the night before they were due lol. You will rock this!

  5. Great! So exciting. We were considering homeschooling but I got overwhelmed with the idea of doing it with one pre-kindergartener and one newly walking baby...so we signed up for a really lovely pre-k. Still toying with the idea of it for kindergarten or first grade though so i look forward to hearing about your adventures with it! :)
